Panama Railroad First Through Train

On August 24, 1854, the Panama Railroad operated its first through passenger train from Aspinwall (Colón) to Panama City, a 47-mile engineering feat across swamps and mountains. Financed by American investors including William Aspinwall, the line used 5-foot gauge and featured innovative trestles and cuts to conquer the terrain. It dramatically shortened travel between the U.S. coasts during the California Gold Rush, carrying thousands of passengers and vast amounts of freight. The project overcame malaria, yellow fever, and massive labor challenges with workers from Ireland, China, and the Caribbean. Its completion years ahead of the canal underscored rail's role in global trade and inspired later transcontinental efforts.
