First Electric Streetcar in Japan

On August 25, 1898, the Kyoto Electric Railway inaugurated electric streetcar operations between Kyoto Station and Fushimi, the first such system in Japan. Engineer Tanabe Sakuro oversaw the project, importing technology from the United States. This innovation replaced horse-drawn trams, enabling faster and cleaner urban mobility amid rapid industrialization. The line used overhead trolley wires and 600-volt DC power, serving as a model for other Japanese cities. It significantly impacted daily life, commerce, and the broader adoption of electric rail across Asia, contributing to Tokyo's later subway developments.
