Opening of Thailand's First Railway Line

On August 25, 1862, King Mongkut presided over the opening of Siam's first railway, a 20-kilometer line from Bangkok to Paknam that introduced steam power to the kingdom. British engineers supervised construction using imported locomotives and wrought-iron rails to navigate seasonal flooding. This project reflected Siam's strategy of selective modernization to resist colonial pressures while expanding rice exports. The railway boosted trade along the Chao Phraya River corridor and trained local workers in Western engineering practices. Its success directly influenced the later expansion of the State Railway of Thailand network, connecting the capital to the interior and symbolizing the nation's transition into the industrial age.
