Published on August 26, 1963, the Beeching Report titled 'The Reshaping of British Railways' proposed closing over 2,000 miles of track and 2,300 stations to stem losses. Commissioned by the British Transport Commission under Dr. Richard Beeching, it analyzed uneconomic branch lines and advocated modernization of main routes with diesel and electric traction. While controversial for devastating rural communities, it led to the preservation of key corridors and the rise of heritage railways.
